about

This song was written in December 2019 and was only sang a couple of times. as Christmas was nearly over before it had been completed. I had no intention of recording it but I got a request from a staff member in Ennistymon hospital to record a couple of songs for a Christmas party. I had decided that I would do a video recording this song but a few days before I was supposed to do it, AnneMarie's aunt Aine passed away after having had Alzheimer's for a about 6 years. At her funeral many stories were told about her love for young children, being a primary school teacher in Ballinkillen, Co. Carlow. She also had a great love of music.

After doing the video recording, we both said that it would be lovely to do a proper recording and release it as a fundraising single for the Alzheimer's society in Aine's memory. In a flash Kieran McDermott was practicing the air on guitar and we social distanced our way up to Fanore to John Queally's stables where Rosaleen Marion arranged a recording. AnneMarie stood outside, Kieran and Rosaleen masked up and we got it done.

Gerry Howard from Fanore who has done years of fundraising for Alzheimer’s put me in contact with Fiona in ASI Ennis and she got me through to Jarlath in Dublin and we are delighted to be able to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.

We really hope you enjoy the song. Please share it with children as we hope that it will add to the magic of Christmas while supporting a very good cause.

lyrics

The 24th of December the eve of Christmas day
When Santa and his helpers they were loading up the sleigh
With my youngest daughter I turned on the Santa tracker
As we waited for relations to pull a Christmas cracker
As soon as he left his house he shot off with great speed
And to the South Pacific he bravely did proceed
In Papua New Guinea, In Tonga and in Guam and all the Solomon Islands
He looked after everyone.

New Zealand and Australia were next in his plan.
He stopped off in Tasmania before making for Japan
He got delayed a while in China with all the girls and boys
Thailand, India oh he flew around Mumbai
And it wasn’t very long before he covered Pakistan
He safely navigated going through Afghanistan
Said Santa to his reindeers on to Moscow with the sleigh
Let’s offload these Russian dolls I didn’t know how much they’d weigh.

As day turned to evening our cousins all arrived
But from the Santa tracker I couldn’t take my eyes.
When I had got back to it he’d been to Kathmandu
He had done the horn of Africa
He was outside Timbuktu
Nigeria, Liberia and Algeria he was there
And on to Eastern Europe
Boldly he did dare
He belted thru the Balkans and he raced ‘round Romania
We watched him passing Poland, Latvia Lithuania

And up to Scandinavia he’d it done in half and hour
And down cross central Europe with more reindeer power.
When he’d finished in the Vatican the wife she started roaring
All the children off to bed I want to hear ye snoring

As he was coming close to Ireland I too went to bed
I had another peek at it, he was moving round Madrid
I was wild with excitement like the days I went to school
As I got underneath the covers he was leaving Liverpool.
He rolled up to Belfast and down through south Armagh
All across the midlands bound for Ballina
But the next thing I remember was the sound of children’s screams
Santa had delivered they woke me from my dreams

He did the Aran Islands and went out across the sea
From Nebraska to Alaska, North Dakota, Tenessee
Out to Honolulu and down to Mexico
And he finished up that evening in Tierra del Fuego
‘Twas with joy in his heart and with pleasure in his soul
He turned around the reindeer and made straight for the pole
When he safely landed he locked the sleigh in the shed
He tore into a plate of sandwiches and toddled off to bed
Diddilldy ie die die die diddillidy ie die diddliddy ie die dough
Die die die die diddillidy ie die diddilldy ie die dough
Oh Die die die die die diddiliddy ie die diddiliidy ie die dobe
That’s the story of how santa clause flew around the globe

about

Peter Casey County Clare, Ireland

I started writing songs over 10 years ago and mostly sang them in local singing sessions. In 2018 I put them on a CD called Out in the Day. I look forward to the end of lockdown and more singing sessions.

I'm originally from Lisdoonvarna in North Clare and many of my songs have a local theme and have a lot of local names and words.
